1. The Concept
The Quest is a 2D atmospheric narrative-adventure game focused on exploration, environmental restoration, light-based puzzles, lore, and combat. The player explores a mysterious corrupted world and uses light to reveal, interact with, and restore the environment.Target audience: Players who enjoy atmospheric and narrative games such as GRIS, Journey, Ori, and Inside.
The main hook is the satisfaction of turning a dark, corrupted space into a clean, restored and beautiful one, while discovering what happened to the world.
2. Core Loop & First Session
The core loop is:
Explore → Find/Use Light → Solve Puzzle → Restore Area → Fight → Discover Lore → Unlock New Path
In the first few minutes, the player:
- Enters a dark cave.
- Learns basic movement and exploration.
- Finds a light source.
- Uses light to activate the environment.
- Solves a simple light puzzle.
- Encounters an enemy.
- Restores part of the cave.
- Discovers a piece of lore.
The first session should leave the player thinking:
“What is this place, and what will happen when I restore more of it?”
3. Progression & Metagame
Day-1 Hook
The main Day-1 hook is environmental restoration.
Players gradually transform areas from:
Corrupted → Partially Restored → Fully Restored
Seeing the environment visibly change gives the player a sense of accomplishment.
The second hook is mystery. Lore is discovered through exploration rather than being explained directly.
Long-Term
A full game could expand this through:
- New areas to restore
- New light abilities
- Combat abilities
- Hidden areas
- Collectible lore
- Larger environmental transformations
- More complex puzzles
4. Monetization
The Quest would be positioned as a premium art and media entertainment package, rather than a conventional mobile free-to-play game.
The core game would be sold as a paid experience, with additional artistic content available for players who want to engage deeper with the world.
The package could include:
- The Game - the complete interactive narrative experience.
- Digital Artbook - concept art, environment development, visual research and world-building.
- Original Soundtrack - the game's music and atmospheric audio.
- Behind-the-Scenes Content (Lore) - optional development and world-building material.
The idea is to treat The Quest as more than just a game- it becomes an interactive art world supported by multiple forms of media.
This allows monetization to come from the value of the world and its artistic content, rather than ads, energy systems, pay-to-win mechanics, or intrusive microtransactions.
5. AI
AI was used as a development tool. All art is human made!
I used it to help with:
- Unity/C# scripting
- Debugging
- Mobile controls
- WebGL issues
- Packaging
6. Shipping & Testing
The first thing I would test is whether the restoration mechanic is genuinely satisfying.
I would test:
- Do players understand what to do without instructions?
- Do they enjoy exploring?
- Do they understand the light mechanics?
- Are puzzles too easy or frustrating?
- Is combat supporting exploration?
- Do they want to play another area?
Numbers I would watch
- Average session length
- Restoration interaction rate
- Percentage of players wanting to continue
I would change direction if players consistently ignore restoration, don't understand the core mechanic, or finish the prototype without wanting to explore further.
7. Reference Games
GRIS - Atmospheric storytelling and visual transformation.
Journey - Exploration, mystery and environmental storytelling.
Ori and the Will of the Wisps - 2D exploration, abilities and combat.
What I changed
I combined these influences with a central mechanic that is more interactive:
The environment doesn't just tell the story — the player actively restores it.
